Brodeur (Tactical Landing), a 14-1 longshot, was able to handily defeat race favorite Ari Ferrari J in capturing the $80,000 Kentucky Sire Stakes for three-year-old harness racing trotting colts Monday (Aug. 7) at The Red Mile in Lexington, KY.
The 9th race co-feature saw four lead changes by the half mile as Challenger (Tim Tetrick) was first on the lead, then Khaosan Road (Ake Svanstedt) moved up to take command and also on the outside was the race favorite from post 10, Ari Ferrari J (Dexter Dunn), who took command at the opening quarter mile in :27.2.
It was then that driver Tony Hall moved out of fifth place with Brodeur, and they came flying first-over and took the lead away from Ari Ferrari J before the half mile marker in :54.3.
Once in command, Brodeur then faced a first-over challenge by Country Dagger (Brian Sears) and they pressed the leader to the three-quarters in 1:23.
Coming down the stretch, Ari Ferrari J found clearance but could not mount an attack on Brodeur, who went on to win by one and one-half lengths in 1:51.3. Ari Ferrari J was second with Country Dagger third.
BRODEUR REPLAY
It was a lifetime mark for Brodeur, who is trained by Annett Lorentzon, who co-owns the colt with Aci Stuteri and Kjell Johansson. He paid $30.60 in winning for the second straight start and his third win in his last four starts.
In the 15th race second $80,000 division of the KYSS, this time for two-year-old trotting colts, it was Longfellow S (Greenshoe) and driver Brian Sears who came from off the pace to beat the 4/5 race favorite Duke Of Walner.
From the start of the race it was Vocalize (Andy McCarthy) leading from post seven and working their way to the lead with Lammtarra (Mattias Melander) sitting second to the quarter in :27.2.
As they approached the half mile in :56.2, Tim Tetrick came on the outside with Duke Of Walner and they cleared to the lead. Then Lammtarra came back first-over and trying to follow second over was Longfellow A and driver Brian Sears.
By the three-quarters in 1:26, Duke Of Walner was up by two lengths on the field, but now coming on was Longfellow S and they kept on rolling down the stretch and caught Duke Of Walner to win by a half a length in 1:54. Duke Of Walner held for seond with Topmost (Yannick Gingras) third.
LONGFELLOW S REPLAY
Trained by Marcus Melander, it was a lifetime mark for Longfellow S in only his second start of his career. He is owned by Courant Inc. of Delray Beach and Morten Langli of Oslo, Norway. He paid $9.22 to win.
