Black Hope (Bar Hopping) and 21-year-old Cole Olson chose the overland trip and won the Open Handicap Trot at Bally’s Dover on Tuesday night.
Global Believer S, the 3/2 betting favorite, sprinted to the top from post 7 and reached the opening quarter in 27.1. Northern Express left but settled in the pocket. Muscle Dynasty, sensing a fierce early battle, chose to race off the speed and settled along the pylons at the quarter. That move changed the strategy of the race.
Driver Tim Tetrick was able to throttle the speed of Global Believer S and continued on an uncontested lead at the half in 56.2, a 29.1 quarter. Black Hope marched 1st over up the backstretch in pursuit of the leader. Fifty Ways followed 2nd over. Global Believer S received extreme pressure from a fired up Black Hope as they raced as a team to the three quarters in 1:25.1 (28.4). Muscle Dynasty circled 3 wide from the back of the pack but that bid stalled.
Black Hope was able to wear down Global Believer S in the stretch and won by two and three quarters of a length in 154.4. He paid $36 to win.
Global Believer S, who cut most of the race fractions, finished 2nd. Darbyshire closed late and finished 3rd.
