Welcome into our Speed In The Breed article. A look into the successful families represented at the trials and workouts.
If you look into the sales catalogue or those that find fame out on the track in the features races youāre likely to find that many of the champions of today come from great families of the past. Here we touch on that habit of success- how the great families continue to leave the very best.
A look at the Rangiora trials and workouts on the 19th of February saw some notable bloodlines come to the fore. The honorable mentions includeā¦
Buddha (Downbytheseaside – Tricky Girl) Get in touch with your inner-self, feel the transcendent speed run through your veins and on towards the winning post! This Regan Todd trained runner looked very much at one with himself when qualifying in the second heat of the day. The Downbytheseaside colt was warmed up down the outer of the track late to snatch the win in a comfortable 3.26.9 over the 2600m stand trip. Thereās plenty to like about this breed – Dam Tricky Girl may have only won a single event but has left the much-improved Woodlea Jewel (5 wins) while Granddam Annie Jay left the class mare in Elusive Chick, a winner of the 4YO Harness Jewels Diamond of 2013, and runner-up in the NSW Oaks of the year before. They’ll be a decent number of punters that’ll have faith in this prospect when reaching the racetrack.
Woodlea RocksĀ (Johnny RockĀ –Ā Woodlea DJ) Thomas Twidle is never too far away from having a nice horse and Woodlea Rocks could well be the next of his well-known breed to turns heads on the track. The juvenile saw off a host of Mark and Nathan Purdon trained runners to post a nice win in the 2rd heat of the day. Woodlea Rocks looks set to continue a great run for dam Woodlea DJ, a mare by McArdle who has left the 13-time winner in Woodlea Diego and the current performer in Cardi B (Sunshine Beach) a winner of 5 from 26 race day starts so far including a memorable placing in the Caduceus Club of Southland /Alabar Fillies Classic just her second start.
Jay R Tolkien (Ā LocharburnĀ –Ā Cheyenne Princess) An interesting runner and son of Locharburn, Jay R Tolkien stretched out well late to safely dip well under the qualifying mark in the 4th of the day. Dam Cheyenne Princess was unplaced from 9 race day starts but the wider family includes the likes of Manjimup (6 wins) and Audacity (2 wins from 6 starts) Kymās Girl, the mother of Granddam La Moocha, needs little introduction.
