A new venture for the Osmond family

There’s not a lot the Osmond family hasn’t done in harness racing but the APG Sydney Yearling Sale will offer a new experience when they put their first yearling through the sales ring on February 25.

Kylie Osmond, wife of Canberra trainer-reinsman Scott and mother of leading junior driver Taylah, will offer (Lot 322) a colt by For A Reason from Extravagant Miss at the sale.

Lot 322

The athletic youngster is out of a full sister to smart pacer Shoobee Doo (1.49.4, $440K) and Katchar Shoobee (1.52.1, $140K) from the family of Life Of Luxury (1.51, $476K) and Lancelot Bromac (1.53.8, $395K).

“We breed horses to race but when we got this mare, I wanted to try and sell her foals through the sale,” Kylie Osmond said. “I bought Extravagant Miss at the Bathurst sale. I had been the under bidder on every damn yearling I bid on that day, so we were glad when she was knocked down to us.

“I hadn’t even seen her. I had eyes on her because of her breeding and she turned out to be a nice type.

“She showed promise but got a bone chip in her knee and the bone fused. It couldn’t be fixed with an operation, so she became a broodmare.

“I always wanted a For A Reason and the stud said it would be a good cross, with three crosses to Artsplace, and it has worked out well.”

Osmond said the colt was a racy type and should be an early goer. He was born and raised on the 80-acre Osmond property, 10 minutes out of Canberra.

“He was a beautiful foal but he plateaued a bit after he was weaned so we brought him in early for his sales prep and he has come on nicely,” she said. “He came in with a bit of attitude but has become my best friend. He is not overly big but he is athletic and looks like he will go as a two-year-old.”

Osmond said the horses were a real family affair.

“We moved here eight years ago and we have nine horses in work at the moment, as well as a couple of broodmares and the yearlings,” she said. “We both work fulltime so it’s early starts and long days”

“Scott’s dad, Ian, comes out nearly every day to help with the horses. He is 76 but he stills shoes most of the horses” She continues. “Taylah works for James Rattray but she has a yearling here that she bought from the APG Gold Coast sale that is nearly ready to go in the cart.

“We don’t have a city horse. We are happy if they pay their way and we love the atmosphere at the country tracks.”
