APG Yearling Sale graduates make waves in WA

Graduates from last year’s Perth APG Yearling Sale have won six of the first seven two-year-old races of the new season in WA – headed by outstanding harness racing gelding Louie Vee (Stay Hungry), who won at Gloucester Park in 1.55.6 on Tuesday. 

The Stay Hungry youngster stamped himself as a strong fancy for the 2YO colts APG Sales Classic on March 1 when he led from barrier five and reeled off his final 800m in 56.6sec to beat stablemate Mysta Moon Walker by a half head at his first race start. 

Henley Brook trainer Robbie Williams said both youngsters were very impressive and he expected them to play a part in the Sales Classic heats at Gloucester Park on Tuesday. 

Louie Vee (bred by Adda Equine Stud) has drawn barrier 5 in the first colts heat and Mysta Moon Walker (KTC Bloodstock) has drawn six in the third heat. 

“They had been working really well on the track, so we weren’t surprised by their efforts,” Williams said. “They didn’t get great draws in the heats but I expect a forward showing.” 

Williams said he chose Louie Vee on pedigree but could see his potential when he viewed him on sale day. 

“I picked him from the book. I am a big fan of Stay Hungry and I think he could develop into an outstanding sire,” Williams said. “And he was out of a Bettors Delight mare, which matched up well. 

“He was a fine youngster. He wasn’t big but he had the frame to suggest he would develop into a nice horse. And he has, over the past 12 months. He is a wiry, athletic horse, not too heavy. My partner Emily chose Mysta Moon Walker. She just loved him and he is out of Salacious Gossip, who is an Art Major mare.” 

“He was tiny but he has a big motor. Louie Vee is probably the better of the two but he is not as professional as Mysta Moon Walker. He is all business. We bought two from the sale and ended up with two lovely youngsters. We are very lucky.” 

Louie Vee has a three-quarter sister in this year’s Perth APG Yearling Sale on March 3. 

Lot 504 is a filly by Poster Boy from My West End Girl. She is from the family of three-time Australian harness horse of the year King Of Swing (1.47.9, $3.3mil) and NZ 3YO filly of the year Bettor Twist (1.52.1, $607K). 

Other early winners from last year’s sale are Reinette (bred by Dennis Roche), Ruby Lou (KTC Bloodstock), When In Vegas (Bond/Gartrell) Bettorgetonpip (Dennis Roche) and Delulu (Karnup Racing). 

Reinette is out of a half-sister to champion mare Wonderful To Fly and has a half-sister (Lot 416) by American Ideal in the this year’s sale. 

Delulu also has a half-sister by Soho Tribeca (Lot 531) in the sale. Her dam Smart By Design is a full sister to outstanding open class mare Kamwood Laughter (1.52.6, $506K).
