Boom sire Volstead adds another classic to his remarkable record

Boom sire Volstead added yet another harness racing classic to his remarkable record when his promising colt Enchauffeur led all the way for an impressive win in the $50,000 Group 2 Betavet Breeders Crown Trotters Final for two year old colts and geldings at Melton last night.

The race was virtually won at the start when Enchauffeur and co-favourite Commodus had a spirited battle for the early lead and Enchauffeur held the front.

Chris Alford on Commodus tried to take a trail but could not get in on the rails and he was left outside the leader with Almighty behind the leader.

Enchauffeur was travelling easily in the lead, and it was obvious on the final bend that he was the one to beat. Driver James Herbertson allowed more rein on straightening, and he drew clear to score comfortably over Rey Bailando who battled on gamely for second with Commodus coming again for third placing.

Breeder Pat Driscoll of Yabby Farms landed a unique trifecta being the breeder of all three placegetters as well as being the owner of the first two.

Driver James Herbertson was praiseworthy of Enchauffeur.

“The horse has lovely manners and a great motor. I wasn’t sure that I would be able to drive him as Greg Sugars (his usual driver) was coming back. Then Greg said to me that You can drive him. It’s great to get the drive. He has a massive future.”
