The harness racing industry remembers the late David Medhurst with a memorial race named in his honour in Hobart on Friday night (Sep. 1).
Medhurst, a former trainer-driver, lost his life in 2013 in a car accident aged 26.
Jacob Duggan would love to win the race named after someone he looked up to as a kid attending race meetings.
“It would mean the world to me (to win the race), especially being so close to the family.
“He was a man that loved his racing, was very kind-hearted and would do anything for you and was a ripping bloke,” said Jacob.
Jacob will partner with the Ben Yole-trained Deadly Assassin, who has drawn barrier six in the national rating 50 to 59 event, which is restricted to claiming novice drivers, and he believes he is on the right horse to win.
“I think if he can get a soft trip and one crack at them late, he should be thereabouts,” Jacob said, with the small field to suit the geldings racing style.
Deadly Assassin has been placed in three of his last five starts, and when fifth in Launceston last Sunday, his own last half-mile was recorded in 57.40s, the quickest of the race.
The David Medhurst Memorial has been annually running on the first weekend of September since his passing.
It is race four on an eight-race program that commences at 17:56 and will be telecast on Sky Racing 2 and TasracingTV.
