Two drivers have been taken to hospital for further assessment after a horror fall at the Mildura harness racing meeting in north west Victoria tonight.
Driver Alex Ashwood was transferred to Mildura Base Public Hospital after the crash in the second race, while David Smith miraculously walked away after being catapulted more than three metres into the air but was also transferred to hospital as a precaution.
Smith landed heavily back into his own sulky and managed to get his horse under control after the incident.
Two other drivers, Aaron Dunn and Ryan Sanderson were both thrown from their sulkies and although sore, were cleared by on-course medical officers.
All horses involved in the incident remarkably escaped serious injury and walked from the track.
Replacement drivers have been confirmed for the engagements of all four reinsmen for the remainder of the program.
Race two on the Mildura program was declared a no race, and the incident resulted in a delay of almost two hours. The final race is now scheduled to be run at 11.20.
