Ammo (Sweet Lou) sprung the biggest upset in the history of the Breeders Crown’s two-year-old pacing colt harness racing division as he rallied at the rail to win Friday’s (Oct. 28) $810,000 renewal at Woodbine Mohawk Park.
The 52-1 shot floated out from post nine and drove on for Dave Miller, swooping wide on the first turn and taking the front at the quarter in :27.1. Miller reined in the colt and allowed Combustion (Todd McCarthy) to completed a second-quarter brush before hitting the halfway point in :56.
Combustion kicked away to three-quarters in 1:23.3 and entered the stretch on top. The favoured Confederate (Tim Tetrick) ignited from the backfield and closed in quickly, but Ammo surged at the inside and held him off by a half-length in 1:50.4.
Combustion finished gamely to keep the show placing.
AMMO REPLAY
It was just Ammo’s second win in five tries. The colt has earned $443,125 for owners Val D’Or Farms of Spring Lake and Theodore Gewrtz of New York City. Joe Holloway conditions the $90,000 Lexington Select Sale purchase.
It was Holloway’s fourth win in the Breeders Crown division. He previously won with Perfect Sting (2020), Badlands Hanover (1998), and Jenna’s Beach Boy (1994).
“We had the nine-hole, and the colt had raced so well last week,” Holloway said in his post-race interview. “But we were a little bit short and came first up ā I thought he raced well last week and I thought racing back in a week might suit him. David (Miller) just drove him great, and sometimes it works out.”
