Outlaw Sharktastic (Smart Shark) made it a “shark” sweep of the top level harness racing contests in the Century Downs race week, taking the Fillies and Mares Preferred on Saturday (Jul. 8) after record-holder Shark Week won the Preferred Handicap on Friday.
The mare, trained and driven by Nathan Sobey, started fifth in a :27.4 first quarter. She then entered the tow of the parked-out In High Cotton (Kelly Hoerdt) in the second panel, completed in :56.1, and stepped around her on the backstretch.
Outlaw Sharktasticās turn of foot also got her by leader Metaki (Brandon Campbell) by three-quarters in 1:24.2, and the mare outpaced that rival to the line to win in 1:53.2.
Metaki was second by atwo lengths. Grey Sea (Michael Hennessy) surged late for third.
OUTLAW SHARKTASTIC REPLAY
The win was Outlaw Sharktasticās first at the open level and gave her a new career speed record. The mare is 10-for-70 lifetime with $91,854 in earnings. Sobey co-owns the five-year-old with Glenda Winkleman of Edmonton and Glenn Pinel of Calgary.
Racing will resume at Century Downs on Friday, Jul. 14.
