CHARLOTTETOWN, PE – With a power move from the backfield, Ultimatelyhandsome (Western Paradise) took Kyle Mason to the harness racing winner’s circle in the inaugural Gamester-Pinkney Memorial Cup final on Tuesday evening (Aug. 16) at Red Shores Racetrack and Casino at the Charlottetown Driving Park.
The event showcased some of the upcoming talent in the Atlantic Province’s with drivers 30 years and younger in the competition but it was the Saint John born Kyle Mason that took the top prize with Ultimatelyhandsome, edging out Oakrock Eldorado (Driven by Brett Leblanc) in 1:59.1. Don’t Ask Logan (Ryder Matthews-Rennison) rounded out the triactor. Dawn Hubbarn trains the winning 10-year-old for owner Ultimate Stable of Greater Lakeburn, N.B.
In Atlantic Sires Stakes trotting action, Up Helly AA (Ambro Barrister) extended his win streak to 14 races as he toyed with his rivals in a $9,800 three-year-old trot division. Ken MacDonald guided the Clare MacDonald trainee to a 13-length romp in 1:59.4 for owner Riley Farms Ltd., of Summerside.
Headline Howie (Ambro Barrister) delivered as the post time favourite in the other $9,800 sophomore trot split in 2:00.2 for trainer-driver Mike McGuigan and owner Jamie Whalen of Avondale.
Irish Ray (Muscle Through It) has yet to taste defeat in his young career as trainer-driver Marc Campbell guided him to a 2:00.3 victory for the undefeated two-year-old colt in the lone $17,560 Atlantic Sires Stakes rookie division. Three Wisemen Stable of Kingston hold the ownership papers of the five-time winner who boosted his bankroll to $31,793.
