SUMMERSIDE, PE – After defeating the top harness racing pacers in Prince County harness racing last week, Hunger Pangs will search for another victory in the Monday evening top class at Red Shores at the Summerside Raceway.
Red Shores and Standardbred Canada will honor caretakers on the program with some special videos, pictures and prize draws. It’s all part of National Caretakers Appreciation Week at tracks across the country. The 12-dash Monday program has a 6:30 P.M. opening post time with the $3,000 feature lining up in race 11.
Marc Campbell will again sit behind Hunger Pangs but from post 5 this week for trainer Blaine McKenna and owner Susanne MacKeigan of Albert Bridge, N.S. The son of Pang Shui rode a perfect two-hole trip last week to victory from post 1 in 1:56.1 but will have more roadwork to do this Monday from the outside.
Flash In The Pang controls the rail in the top event with Adam Merner retaining the drive for trainer Hughie Murphy fresh off a 1:56.2 score his last start. Nogreatmischief will look to add to driver Walter Cheverie’s 2,700 lifetime victories from post 2 while Coasttocoastshark has post 3 for the brother combo of driver Devon Wallace and trainer Jeff Wallace.
Post 4 belongs to Chocolate Swirl, who finished second in last week’s top class, for driver Jason Hughes and trainer Jennifer Doyle.
The Backstretch Beat places Flash In The Pang on top of the Monday night feature.
“Flash In The Pang toyed with his rivals last time and draws the rail in the pace of the night. Merner has a few ways he can play this but the main thing is to keep up handy the action to loom the danger at the end.”
The driver’s race continues to be tight at the Western oval with Campbell leading the way at 36 wins ahead of Hughes at 34 wins. Corey MacPherson has steered 31 winners in Summerside this season to sit in third place.
The trainer’s standings has a tie in the top spot as Ron Gass and Campbell both sit at 15 wins on the year. Third place belongs to Wade Sorrie at 12 wins.
