Whiplash Smile (Mystician) defeated favourite Sunshine Boy, who understandably had a hard time finding the line on a rainy Friday night (Sep. 14) at Fraser Downs in the Preferred Pace.
Whiplash Smile took the pocket to the quarter in :27 before being relegated to the three-hole as Sunshine Boy (Scott Knight) brushed to the front on the first trip past the stands and led to the half in :56. It was then Whiplash Smileās turn to face the breeze, pulling out for Rod Therres on the backstretch and putting the leader under pressure to three-quarters in 1:24.2.
The pair went to battle around the final turn, and Sunshine Boy leveraged his inside position to create a length-and-a-half of advantage into the stretch. But Whiplash Smile marched on, chipping down the lead, and he defeated his rival in the final strides to win by a neck in 1:54.1.
Waitin Ona River (Kevin Anderson) closed past horses in the backfield to take third.
