Woodmere Alvin (Rollwithitharry) got up for his first victory under new harness racing ownership in a fiery final quarter at The Raceway at the Western Fair District on Wednesday (Mar. 29).
Paul Davies guided him to a pylon seat quickly, pitching camp in the six-hole through the quarter in :29.1. He shifted out third-over at three-eighths and tracked the helmet of Colin Kelly aboard Modern Writer to the half in :59.3 and onto the backstretch.
Davies pulled the trigger at three-quarters in 1:28.2, but Modern Writer made the same move and forced Woodmere Alvin to stack four-wide on the swing for home. Woodmere Alvin closed through the turn and found even more when back on level footing. He ignited and chased down the wavering Journalistic (Tyler Borth) in deep stretch to earn the victory in 1:59.
He beat Journalistic by a head in the photo. Modern Writer finished third.
WOODMERE ALVIN REPLAY
Woodmere Alvin, previously connected to trainer Don Howlett and owners Matt Howlett and Blair Kidd, moved to the Davies barn after his Feb. 20 start. The gelding raced for the Howletts in Miami in summer 2022 before they moved him to Ontario in October. Davies, an Arthur resident, now co-owns Woodmere Alvin with Nathan Sobey. The gelding was winless in three prior starts for them but was third in his past two. The five-year-old is now 18-for-73 with $89,826 in earnings.
Friday racing is up next at The Raceway at the Western Fair District on Mar. 31 at 5:50 p.m. EDT.
