Clearing Maidens – Bazooka goes boom, Tyson goes bam, Memphis goes blaster!

In our weekly Clearing Maidens article we look through those breaking through for their first victories.

 It could be a long-time maiden who has finally mastered race rivals or a progressive star of the track in the future – they all got one thing in common now – they’re race winners!

Addington  26^th July

Courtney Rose (Vincent – Take A Break) A change of stable seems to have done the trick for this daughter of Vincent, the Ross Houghton trained runner making big strides lately, chasing home Lakelsa last week and then delivered a sure and steady maiden victory on Friday night at Addington when asked to lead throughout. The win came up at the expense of favoured runners in Delightful Dreams and Melton Magnate – it was the 13^th start of the career for Courtney Rose. The damline goes back to the impressive Give Or Take, a winner of some 4races and mother to the evergreen Take After Me (21 wins).

Midnight Diamond (Royalty For Life – Lady Midnight) A winner for the sire Royalty For Life, Midnight Diamond was another maiden winner to took the pace up at Addington early in the card and prospered because of it, the van a nice position for the R Holmes runner, a late bid from Clovelly Hill was seen off in the shadows of the post. There’s plenty of breeding here to suggest this will not be the last win for Midnight Diamond either, dam Lady Midnight has left the impressive Hope trained Midnight Dash, the winner of some $380,000.

Ocean Of Tears (Downbytheseaside – Crimson Glory) The money was on after some strong recent trial and workout form – and the daughter of Downbytheseaside delivered powerfully in the 6^th of the night out of Addington. Using gate-speed to obtain an early lead, John Morrison gave that position away with a lap to go, it proved a prudent decision even with the leader Jay R Tolkien failing with a furlong to go – John Morrison simply peeling Ocean Of Tears out to mount a bid wider on the track. The win continues a nice run for dam Crimson Glory – her progeny now includes 4 winners from five foals including the 4-time winner in Crimson Rock (Pet Rock).

Alexandra Park 26^th

Bazooka (Bettor’s Delight – Asuka) Doing all the work from the front of the race from the #1 draw, Bazooka didn’t let the punters down in the 2^nd of the night at Alexandra Park, strolling away to score well for the Steven Reid barn.  The win followed on from a sound 3^rd in behind Shake A Leg when produced to the track on the 12^th. Bazooka is a full brother to the 9-time winner in Lalibela with the impressive Jack The Builder, a 40time winner from just 5 raceday starts, also being out of dam Asuka.

Tyson (Art Major – Helena Jet) I’m gonna knock you out! Swinging for the winning post in the last of the night, Tyson, well supported on the tote, managed to be the last horse standing, winning over the Telfer duo of Turn O The Tide and Always B Magic.  Tyson had previously raced without troubling the judges at both Cambridge and Alexandra Park. Dam Helena Jet was known for her turn of foot, winning 13 races from her 32 raceday appearances. Tyson is a full brother to the nice pacer in Nicholas Cage.

Addington 28^th July

Whosedreamingnow (Sweet Lou – Dream Offer) A quick turnaround from racing on Friday night behind Courtney Rose and company might have made the difference for this son of Sweet Lou. The Yesberg trained runner, who was punted into favoritism in the 3^rd of the day at Addington, duly delivered at a little over 3/1. The win came up after sound showings against the likes of Farewell Spit and Reklaws Dream in recent efforts. Dam Dream Offer won 1 of two raceday starts and has proven herself a worthy broodmare – the stylish Bettor Dream, a 13-time winner being her first live foal, while Can’t Refuse, a full brother to Bettor Dream, also proved a star, running 2^nd in the NSW Derby of 2016.

Memphis Blaster (Bettor’s Delight -Memphis Melody) We made mention of this 3yr-old recently in our Speed in the breed article – the breeding obviously caught the eye then and the performance to take out the 7^th on the card may means the win isn’t going to be the last for this son of Bettor’s Delight. A debut run behind Vin Rules last week must have improved the W Higgs trained runner as he proved an impressive winner, making the most of a sound start to race in the trail position throughout the 2000m event. A late passing lane move meant Memphis Blaster is a maiden no longer.
