After conquering the Southern Hemisphere, North America awaits Lucky Mum (NZ) (Father Patrick) following her dominant harness racing win in the A$31,000 Group Three Queensland Trotters Oaks (2138m) at Albion Park on Friday night.
LUCKY MUM REPLAY
The NZB Standardbred graduate justified her hot favouritism with a powerful front-running performance to win for trainer Al Barnes and driver Brendan Barnes.
The star trotter was purchased for $32,500 by Rex Peni when she was offered among the Woodlands Stud draft at the 2022 National Yearling Sale at Karaka.
Lucky Mum was among the best of her age group in New Zealand, placing in both the Group One Ace Of Hearts (1980m) and Group Three Northern Trotting Oaks (2200m).
Following her purchase by North American owner Ricky Bucci, the three-year-old crossed the Tasman and has gone on to make a big impact in just three starts in Australia.
“She’s a very nice filly who has a ton of ability, I’m proud of the job she did,” Al Barnes told Harnesslink.
Lucky Mum came into the Queensland Trotters Oaks after an outstanding third placing in the A$150,000 Group One The Great Square, earlier at The Constellations Carnival.
That looked stellar form to bring to the Queensland Trotters Oaks, and it ensured Lucky Mum took out the Group Three feature at short odds.
“Her third in The Great Square behind Rockinwithattitude (AUS) and London To A Brick (AUS) was really pleasing,” Barnes said.
The reputation of the New Zealand bred was instrumental in Lucky Mum going the Barnes stable.
Bucci was keen to source a New Zealand horse that he could bring to North America to race from his own barn.
“Ricky got in contact with me and said he wanted a nice horse, but it had to be a Kiwi horse and preferably a young one,” Barnes said.
“I thought Lucky Mum would be ideal because her run in the Northern Derby in New Zealand was terrific.”
Lucky Mum’s big win in the Queensland Trotters Oaks is something of a Southern Hemisphere swansong.
The filly is booked to fly to North America and join the Bucci stable next month.
