Scott Phelan doesn’t drive too many big race winners these days, preferring to concentrate on harness racing training with Barry Purdon and handing over the reins to Zachery Butcher.
His last Group or Listed winner was Wainui Creek (Bettor’s Delight) in the 2020 G1 New Zealand Standardbred Breeders Stakes.
But tonight in the $70,000 Group Two Gallagher Insurance Delightful Lady Classic, Phelan took the drive on favourite Youretheonethatiwant (Captaintreacherous) and reined the classy filly home to beat another Purdon-Phelan runner Won And Only (Captaintreacherous).
The winning margin was a neck, with the winner running the 1700 metres in 2-06.7 with the last half run in 56.7.
The win was the filly’s third in as many starts and all in the hands of Phelan.
“She’s just got better and better. She got a lovely run which Scotty has given her each time, but she won with a bit of authority tonight,” Barry Purdon told Trackside’s Nicole Sims.
Youretheonethatiwant was bought by Montana Park Pty Ltd as a weanling. She’s out of Bettor’s Delight mare Splendid Me, a full sister to twenty five race winning mare Dream About Me and a half to Hands Christian (Christian Cullen) the winner of thirteen and Christian Me (Christian Cullen) thirty two wins.
Purdon confirmed that the stable’s three runners Youretheonethatiwant, Won And Only and Im Sandra Dee will all be turned out for six weeks and be prepped for the second half of the season.
