Welcome in to our Speed in the breed article. A look into the successful families represented at the trials and workouts.
If you look in the sales catalogue or those that find fame out on the track in the feature races youāre likely to find that many of the champions of today come from great families of the past. Here we touch on that habit of success – how the great families continue to leave the very best.
The trials and workouts to take place at Rangiora on the 8th of October are filled with some impressive types, many of which look set to impress if their breeding is anything to go by.
Runners of interest include-Ā
Whatz My Choice (Bettorās Delight – Lauraella) A standout dam makes this a real runner to take notes on. Out of the star mare Lauraella, this juvenile colt is set to take part in the 2nd heat of the day out of Rangiora. This appearance will be a second public display for the 2yr-old after closing behind Selsey Anne last week. Dam Lauraella needs little introduction, sweeping all before her in a fantastic racing career that including back-to-back Gr1 victories in May of 2009 when victorious in the Nevele R Fillies Series Final and NZ Oaks. Her career earnings standing at just shy of the $650ā000 on her retirement from the track.
As a mother Lauraella has been exceptional, the impressive Express Stride (Bettorās Delight) the winner of 14, being her first foal to race. Others to impress from her progeny include the 5-time winner Emmber (Bettorās Delight) and her sister Black Pearl (3 wins)
Whatz My Choice is a name youāll want to remember.
Lover Boy (Love You – Focus On Me) Another to appear at Rangiora out of a fantastic family, this Bagrie trained runner will go around in the 3rd heat of the day. Dam Focus On Me posted 1 victory from just the two appearances and has proven herself a capable mother, leaving the 5-time winner Tripās On Me as her first foal while also producing the class act Highgrove (11 wins) in 2018. The juvenile trotter Nobilo is also part of this family.
Itās a family of strong trotting types so thereās no reason to believe the winning story wonāt continue with Lover Boy.
Lover Boy qualifies in May of this year.
Selsey Mae (Vincent – Twist N Shout) Another dam thatās immediately recognizable. This M Jones trained runner is set to dance in the 4th heat on the card is one to follow. Dam Twist N Shout put in notable efforts on the track, winning 5 from 39 including and running 2nd to the previously mentioned Lauraella in the 2YO Diamond of 2008 at Cambridge.
Her performances on the track have paled somewhat to her efforts to leave performers as a mother, her hugely successful career as a broodmare includes leaving the 40-time winner Harry Hoo, the 7-time winner in Im Captain Max, and the exciting Hydeeho, who has impressed in his career so far, notching 5 victories from just 9 starts.
Selsey Mae, seen in workout action last week, is another of the Rangiora runners who may well benefit from some amazing bloodlines going forward.
