Although harness racing pinup boy Dreams Are Free (Captaintreacherous) is likely to start favourite, the possibilities won’t end there in the $60,000 Group Two Alabar Southern Supremacy Stakes Final at Ascot Park on Sunday.
Trainers Premiership leaders Steve and Amanda Telfer who won last year’s Supremacy with Ohoka Connor have two runners in this year’s race – Double Jeopardy (Downbytheseaside) and Built For Glory (Bettor’s Delight).
Both horses had a run at Ascot Park this morning.
“They worked together. They had a bit of a blow, so they needed it this morning. Built For Glory led up and Double Jeopardy sat on his back. They both hit the line strong with not much between them. I’m really pleased with how they’ve come through last weeks run and they should have improved from it. The way they’ve been during the week suggests they may have,” Steve said.
He added the 2700 metres shouldn’t be a problem for either horse.
“You don’t really know until they’ve done it but they’re both very relaxed animals and tend not to take too much out of themselves and are quite easy to drive. I think both have got options and are adaptable and they’ll go a long way to seeing out the 2700 metres.”
Nathan Williamson has won this race twice before and he’ll present a two pronged attack in Sunday’s Supremacy with Miraculous (Bettor’s Delight) and Dreams Are Free (Captaintreacherous).
He’s expecting both to have improved since their runs at Winton last Saturday.
“Dreams Are Free seems to have come through that run really well. He’s had a bit of travel and racing up in the North Island. He was just a wee bit down on his best the other day but had a good blow. That’s telling me he’s coming on from that run so we’re looking forward to Sunday with him,” Williamson said.
He said Miraculous had a tough race when winning at Wyndham so he’s given him an easier time in training since.
Brent Barclay who’s won three Supremacys will drive Miraculous from barrier five.
“He was a bit fresh and short of a run the other day. I think both should improve with the run and should go good races.”
This is the 21st year that Alabar has sponsored the race. Previous winners include Giovanetto, Howard Bromac, Roman Gladiator, Changeover, Auckland Reactor and Highview Tommy.
2021 winner Ragazzo Mach holds the race record of 3-17.8.
