Point and shoot, that’s all harness racing driver Dexter Dunn had to do with Market Based as the son of Sweet Lou led from start to finish in the $146,700 Matron Stakes for two-year-old pacing colts held at Dover Downs Thursday.
Starting from the rail, Market Based led the field to the first quarter in :27.1 with Nautical Hanover (Todd McCarthy) landing in the two-hole trip spot. They raced that way past the half mile in :55.
Then in the backstretch, approaching the three-quarters, Fourever Boy and driver Mike Wilder came first-up but by the three-quarters in 1:23.1, they were unable to collar Market Based, who went on to win by two and one-quarter lengths in 1:50.4. Fourever Boy was second with Nautical Hanover third.
It was a lifetime mark and the fourth win this year for Market Based. He is trained by Nancy Takter and co-owned by Chuck Pompey, Ed Gold and the H&M Taylor Stable, and paid $5.40 to win as the betting favorite.
MARKET BASED REPLAY
“He seems to like the 5/8th mile tracks,” said Nancy Takter of Market Based. “He gets around the turns well and he has good early speed which really helps him to control the pace. I was actually going to quit with him for the year, but maybe now we will give him a shot in the Governor’s Cup. We will see how he comes out of this race and make plans from there.”
