There were two $70,000 Corbin Sire Stakes held at the Red Mile Monday afternoon (Nov. 7) for three-year-old harness racing trotting colts and fillies.
The 1st race on the card was for the sophomore trotting colts and started off with the race favorite S I P (Joe Bongiorno) taking the lead to the opening quarter in :29.4 with Iwonāt Backdown AS (Lionhunter) and driver Tony Hall sitting on their backs.
Ducasse (Andy McCarthy) moved up and to the lead over S I P by the half mile in :57.4 and held the field at bay passing the three-quarters in 1:25.3.
Holding a two-length lead coming down the stretch, Ducasse looked home free until Iwonāt Backdown AS and Hall came charging down the stretch and blew by Ducasse to win by one and one-half lengths in 1:52.1. S I P was third.
IWONāT BACKDOWN AS REPLAY
It was the third win on the year for Iwonāt Backdown AS. He is trained by Anette Lorentzon for owners Acl Stuteri Ab and Kjell Johansson. He paid $19.30 to win.
Next up in the 5th race it was Eternal Lee (Southwind Frank) and driver Andy McCarthy who came after early leaver and pacesetter Marge At Large (Joe Bongiorno) and took the lead away after a :27.2 opening quarter.
With no one challenging, Eternal Lee led to the half mile in :55.3 and started to open up on the field, leading by three lengths at the three-quarters in 1:23.3. He led by four lengths at the top of the stretch and eased off down the lane, winning by one length in 1:52.2. Rock A Bye Lindy (Dexter Dunn) was second with La Lolita (Tyler Shehan) third.
ETERNAL LEE REPLAY
It was the fourth straight win and eighth of the season for Eternal Lee. She is trained by Chris Ryder for owner and breeder Murray Ferguson, Jr. of Ontario. She paid $8.14 to win.
