Cannibal (Sweet Lou) and It’s My Show renewed their harness racing rivalry Tuesday (Aug. 22) at the Red Mile in the $80,000 Kentucky Sire Stakes third leg for three-year-old colt and gelding pacers.
The 1st race co-feature saw race favorite It’s My Show (Scott Zeron) get out to the early lead only to have Cannibal and driver Yannick Gingras come on the outside to take the lead past the opening quarter mile in :27.1.
Cannibal then cut fractions of :56 and 1:23.2 with It’s My Show in the pocket-seat and no one else pulling on the right line to attempt to challenge.
At the top of the stretch, Cannibal had a one length lead and then It’s My Show started to come after him, but Cannibal kicked in a :25.2 last quarter mile and held off It’s My Show (whose last quarter was :25.1) to win by a half a length in 1:48.4. It’s My Show was second with A Cool Moment (Joey Putnam) finishing third.
CANNIBAL REPLAY
It was the seventh win in just nine starts this year for Cannibal. He is trained by Nancy Takter for Diamond Creek Racing. The colt was bred by Diamond Creek Farm and paid $6.16 to win.
Last week when the two top three-year-olds met, It’s My Show scored a 1:46.4 mile to tie the world record as the fastest three-year-old ever.
The co-feature was the 6th race $80,000 Kentucky Sire Stakes 3rd leg for three-year-old trotting fillies that saw Mambacita (Tactical Landing) and driver Scott Zeron go wire-to-wire in 1:51.
Zeron left with Mambacita and went right to the lead with Walner Payton (Dexter Dunn) getting the two-hole trip to the opening quarter mile in :27.4. Mambacita then went unchallenged past the half mile in :56.1.
That was when Railee Something, the race favorite, and driver Yannick Gingras started up first-over from fifth place and they were able to flush Caviart Gwen (Andy McCarthy) first-over as they went by the three-quarters in 1:24.2.
Fanning out four-across at the top of the stretch, Mambacita was still the one to beat and she held her lead all the way to the wire by three-quarters of a length over Walner Payton second and Caviart Gwen third.
