Dover, DE — Fifty Ways (Donato Hanover) took advantage of a cover trip and scored a 26-1 harness racing upset in Tuesday’s (Nov. 28) $25,000 Open Handicap Trot at Bally’s Dover.
JL Cruze trotted quickly from the gate but was parked to the quarter in :28.1 before clearing I Get It. While the 12-year-old JL Cruze continued on the lead, reaching the half in :57.1, Fifty Ways angled second-over behind live cover provided by On Higher Ground. JL Cruze braced for the challenge and maintained his lead past three-quarters in 1:26, only for long shot Fifty Ways to circle three-wide nearing the top of the stretch.
Fifty Ways and driver Ross Wolfenden reached the line in time, prevailing in a four-horse photo finish to win in 1:56.1. I Get It used the open stretch to finish second; That Ole Bar Stool was third. JL Cruze became leg weary late and finished fourth, beaten only a neck.
Fifty Ways, a 5-year-old gelding, is trained by Joe Columbo for George and Tina Dennis Racing. Columbo and the Dennises combined for four wins on the card.
