There were two $80,000 harness racing divisions of the Kentucky Sire Stakes held at The Red Mile Tuesday (August 1) afternoon for three-year-old trotting fillies and two-year-old pacing fillies. The race favorites won each division and a national season’s mark was taken in the two-year-old pacing division.
The 1st race was the three-year-old trotting fillies where Mommamia Volo (Tactical Landing) was able to grind it out against pacesetter Kraboudian (Mattias Melander) and post a head triumph for driver Todd McCarthy in 1:52.2.
McCarthy sat second with Mommamia Volo behind Karaboudian from the start through fractions of :29 and :56.1 before pulling the pocket and coming after the race leader past the three-quarters in 1:24.3.
It took most of the stretch drive before Mommamia Volo worn down Karaboudian to snatch the victory. Caviart Gwen (Scott Zeron) was third.
MOMMAMIA VOLO REPLAY
It was the first win in four starts this year for Mommamia Volo and a lifetime mark. She is trained by Carter Pinske for the Kentuckiana Racing Stable and Jorgen Jahre, Jr. and paid $3.86 to win.
The 6th race was the second $80,000 Kentucky Sire Stakes, this for two-year-old pacing fillies where Geocentric (Sweet Lou) became the fastest filly in North America this season on a one-mile track with her impressive 1:49.4 triumph.
Driven by Tim Tetrick for trainer Brian Brown, Geocentric started from the rail and never looked back. She cut fractions of :28.1, :56 and 1:23.1 and then cut loose down the stretch with a :26.3 last quarter to win in a romp by seven and three-quarter lengths. Gifted One (Todd McCarthy) was second with Reachingforthemoon (Andy McCarthy) third.
GEOCENTRIC REPLAY
Undefeated in three starts, this was a lifetime mark for Geocentric, who is co-owned by Milton Leeman, Alan Keith, James Stambaugh and Joe Sbrocco. She paid just $2.10 to win.
