GOSHEN, N.Y.—The New York Sire Stakes holds its 2024 County Fair Series Finals this Sunday, September 1 at the Goshen Historic Track. The harness racing finals will feature eight races of 2- and 3-year-old Standardbred pacers and trotters, with post time at 1 p.m.
“The County Fair Series has showcased memorable experiences all season long and we’re looking forward to the season culminating in the Finals on Sunday,” said Agriculture & NYS Horse Breeding Development Fund Executive Director Ralph Scunziano. “It has been wonderful to see the dedication and passion put on display by the owners, breeders, trainers, drivers and equine athletes that participated in the Series.”
The New York Sire Stakes serves as a model for in-state breeding and racing programs and is the nation’s oldest harness racing program of its kind. Goshen Historic Track, established in 1838, is the oldest active harness racing track in the world.
2024 marked the first year of the Fund’s County Fair Improvement Program, which earmarked funding for qualifying county fairground harness track renovations and maintenance. The program resulted in interest and participation from racetracks throughout the state and led to significant results, including the return of racing to the historic Lewis County Fair in Lowville, NY.
Conducted by the Fund, the County Fair Series is an ideal introduction to the sport of harness racing. The “earn as you learn” non-parimutuel races provide Standardbreds and their drivers with valuable on-track competitive experience. Horses can rise in class to the Excelsior Series and ultimately, the New York Sire Stakes Series, where the best New York-bred 2- and 3-year-old Standardbreds compete.
