Undefeated in 2024, Sugar Instead (Volstead) continued her winning ways with a four-length romp in the $100,000 Ohio Sire Stakes Trot for three-year-old harness racing fillies Wednesday (Aug. 21) evening at MGM Northfield Park. It was Sugar Insteadās eighth straight win this season.
With driver Brett Miller in the sulky, 1/5 race favorite Sugar Instead left from post five and moved into second place behind the pacesetter Jurassic Hattie (Kurt Sugg) as they went to the opening quarter in the 13th race feature in :28.1.
Jurassic Hattie continued to lead the way past the half mile marker in :58.2 and then Iroxanna (Aaron Merriman) started up first-over in the backstretch. Then Miller came out to challenge from the two-hole with Sugar Instead at the three-quarters in 1:27.
Around the final turn and Jurassic Hattie was holding off Sugar Instead on the outside but once they started down the stretch, Miller just raised the lines at Sugar Instead and she trotted away to a four length score in 1:55.2. Jurassic Hattie was second with Iroxanna third.
