Outstanding news from Yonkers Raceway today. Word came down this afternoon that Robert (Cammie) Haughton has been appointed to the newly-created position of Director of Racing at the historic Westchester half-mile harness oval.
Cammie is an astute harness racing executive, former horseman, stout advocate of the game, and a good guy. In a phrase: highly qualified.
Haughton, 57, had been serving as the Raceway’s racing consultant, and is a former presiding judge at both the Meadowlands and Yonkers.
The son of Hall of Famer Billy Haughton, thus has been part of the fabric of the harness game since boyhood. The apple didn’t fall far from the tree.
He also worked as assistant race secretary at Saratoga Raceway following his career as a trainer-driver, and we remember it well during the heyday of Yonkers and Roosevelt. It’s always a joy to reminsce with Cammie about his legendary dad, his late great brother Peter, and check in to see how his mother Dorothy is doing.

“Cammie’s job is to improve our handle,” Yonkers COO Bob Galterio said. “We value his experience, and I would expect him to work in tandem with race secretary Steve Starr, presiding judge Nick Ferriero and the horsemen to do just that.”
“I’m looking forward to starting my new position,” Haughton said. “I definitely believe Yonkers’ product is as good as any in the sport, and all of us are committed to getting the racing fans to take notice.”
