The enthusiastic crowd was treated to a great night of harness racing at Ocean Downs featuring 8 Maryland Standardbred Fund stakes. The first division of the three-year-old filly trot saw Silence is Bliss (Cr Commando) with Allan Davis in the bike stop the timer in 1:58.4 for owners Charles Wimbrow and James Lunn. Robert White trains and Winbak Farm was the breeder.
The second non-wagering event was the 2nd division of filly trotters. The Josh Green trainee My Fire Cloud Too (Cr Commando) came out of the pack at the ¾ pole, catching the leader Sign N Drive (Cr Commando)at the head of the stretch and pulling away by 5 lengths. Time for the mile was 2:01.1. Richard Lombardo and JJ & M Stable co owner the filly and Winbak Farm was the breeder. Allan Davis picked up his 2nd win for the night.
The non-wagering events continued with two divisions of colt & gelding trots. Broken Record (Muscles Yankee) went gate to wire in 1:59 holding off a strong challenge by Lucky Ten K (Lucky Chucky). Ray Schnittker drives, trains and co-owns the colt with Ted Gewertz.
The final early race saw Lucas Wallin pull Smart As A Whip (Donato Hanover) at the half, finally taking the lead from Let It Go (Impel Hanover) at the head of the stretch crossing the finish in 2:00. Ake Svanstedt trains for owner Courant A B, the breeder was Fred Hertrich III.
The 1st division of colt & gelding pacers saw Quick Art (Artzina) continue his win streak and set a new 3 YO gelding stakes record of 1:53.3 for owners Mo Coo Inc. and Jonathan Klee. Tony Morgan was in the bike for trainer Josh Green, Winbak Farm was the breeder. Toms Typhoon ( Cam's Rocket) was second.
Filly pacers were up next with Smart Zone (Rocknroll Hanover) and driver James Lackey content with the pocket trip behind Fancy Sound (Veeza) and Jim Morand. Smart Zone used the stretch to gain a 1¾ length victory in 1:55.2 for owner Roslyn Delgaudio, trainer Matias Ruiz and breeder Winbak Farm.
Driver Corey Callahan was not content to sit in the pack and moved Cover Model (Dragon Again)to the front before the ¾ pole holding off a strong challenge by Rumor Mill (The Panderosa) and driver Vic Kirby, to stop the clock in 1:56.2. CTC Stable co-owns with owner/breeder Fred Hertrich III. Doug Lewis trains.
The final stake of the night was the second division of colt & gelding pacers. The Maryland sired and owned Toms Tornado (Cam's Rocket) went to the front and never looked back for driver Jonathan Roberts. Roger Hans trains for owner/breeder Thomas Cooke. Time for the mile was 1:54.2
Hot hands for the night belonged to Allan Davis with 2 wins and a second in stakes action and 2 more wins in the overnights.
Stakes action continues on Sunday July 19 with the Maryland Sire Stakes preliminaries starting at 6:15 pm. Ocean Downs is also hosting our second driver meet and greet with drivers Corey Callahan, Jason Thompson and Tim Offutt from 6:30 to 7 pm by the winners circle, come get an autograph or bring your camera and take pictures with the drivers.
