CIRCLEVILLE, OH. – With the Ohio Selected Jug Yearling Sale less than 24 hours away, the consignors were busy showing their ‘wares’ to harness racing horse people in advance of Friday’s (Sept. 13) sale.
While the sale is conducted by the Lexington Selected Yearling Sales Co., the auction is owned by the Ohio Harness Horse Breeders, a consortium of about a dozen Buckeye State nurseries that send their products to this marketplace each autumn. Thursday (Sept. 12) is ‘show day’ and the floors and aisles of the barns at Pickaway Ag Center in Circleville, Ohio were bustling with activity.
“We are super excited about the sale,” noted first-year president of the Ohio Harness Horse Breeders Senena Esty exclaimed. In between answering questions from prospective purchasers and combing manes and tails, Esty is a hands-on farm owner, manager and leading consignor.
“There has been a lot of interest with a strong turnout at the various farms to do previews. We like the traffic so far,” Esty stated.
“Ohio is number one in North America for racing opportunities. We have the Ohio Sire Stakes, the Buckeye Stallion Series and 66 County Fairs, so the program could not be any stronger.”
Of course horse people need a place to acquire such performers and the Ohio Selected Jug Sale has been the benchmark for success in the Buckeye State.
In addition to a vast group of ‘first foals’ from the mares, many of Friday’s offerings are brothers or sisters to world champions. Graduates of this sale are at the top, or near the top of every division of the Ohio Sire Stakes standings for 2- and 3-year-old trotters and pacers.
The sale begins at 10 am. Prospective purchasers can bid online by registering click here.
