After two eye-catching placings this preparation, harness racing’s excitement machine, Lennytheshark, is tipped to return to the winners’ circle at Tabcorp Park Melton on Saturday night.
Kept fresh after his second in the Victoria Cup a fortnight ago, Lennytheshark has drawn perfectly in the opening qualifier of the TAB Inter Dominion.
Heats of the time-honoured Championship will be staged throughout Australia, beginning with Victoria at 8:30 and ending with Gloucester Park at 9:30 eastern daylight saving time.
The Inter Dominion Final is scheduled to be run at Menangle on March 1.
A brilliant beginner, Lennytheshark is expected to be pushed forward from barrier three, with most experts predicting the David Aiken-trained stallion to find the front.
With star pacer Guaranteed drawn the pole, the opening stages of the 2240-metre event are crucial.
Thrilled with the five-year-old’s condition, Aiken is confident Lennytheshark can continue his edge over Guaranteed.
Lennytheshark has beaten Guaranteed home during their last three encounters.
“I couldn’t be happier with his draw or where he is at heading into this,” Aiken said. “His two runs this time in have been great against tough opposition and he has improved since his run in the Victoria Cup.
“His work has been super and his fitness is right at its peak.
“Guaranteed is still the one to beat.”
Lennytheshark is one of four runners Aiken has in the Group Two, with Wartime Sweetheart drawn gate two, Cold Major in six and Smudge Bromac in seven.
The three placegetters will secure a berth in the $750,000 Final.
