A field of seven faced the starter for the featured event on Thursday afternoon (Dec. 3) at Harrah's Philadelphia, a trot for non-winners of $22,000 in their last 5 starts.
The wagering public sent Ron Burke trainee Appomattox (Y. Gingras) off as the favorite. The 6-year-old son of Yankee Glide had victories in 2 of his last 3 starts.
Getting away from post 6, he was parked the first half-mile, before overtaking Ras Shakinthtbacon (G. Napolotano Jr.) just after the half. Pressure quickly came however, as Panamanian Hanover (Dave Miller) rushed up to challenge after drafting behind the favorite during the race's middle half.
The 5-year-old gelded son of Andover Hall was able to grind his way to victory, holding off a late closing Outburst (A. McCarthy) to win by three quarters of a length in 1:55.2.
It was the third victory in the last four starts for Panamanian Hanover ($15.20) , who stopped the clock in 1:55.2.
He is owned by Ted Gewertz, and is trained by Scott Di Domenico.
