The Next Generation, a $150,000 race for each division of Ohio bred 2-year-olds, starts Friday (July 2) at Eldorado Scioto Downs.
Both the 2-year-old filly trot (race 8) and the 2-year-old colt trot (race 10) have nine horse fields.
Moments Created (by Creatine) is the slight morning line favorite at 2/1 leaving from the seven hole for the filly trot. Oftom (Long Tom), leaving from post three, is not far behind and has early odds of 3/1. Moments Created won both her qualifier (in 1:59) and herĀ non-winners of one debut on June 28 in 1:58.2,both outings were at Northfield Park. Edward Miller trains the filly for Rebecca Sugg and Watson Harness Racing; Kurt Sugg will drive.
Oftom has two qualifiers under her belt at Northfield, her best in 1:59.3. She then traveled to Scioto and won her non-winners of one race on June 24 in 1:58.1. Jason McGinnis trains the filly for Thestable Oftom Group; Anthony MacDonald will drive. Oftom was a $17,000 Ohio Selected yearling sale purchase back in September 2020.
Voyageoficeandfire (by Break The Bank K) is another McGinnis – MacDonald entrant and is the favorite for the colt trot division at 7/2 on the morning line. The $14,000 Ohio Selected yearling sale purchase has both a qualifier and a start at Northfield Park, having been timed in 1:59 on June 20 for owners Thestable Voyageoficenfire.
Rose Run Xtra (Cash Hall) sits at 9/2 for trainer Ron Burke, driver Chris Page and owners Burke Racing, Hatfield Stables, Knox Services and Jason Melillo. The colt qualified at The Meadows twice before heading to Scioto to finish second to Oftom in his racing debut. He was also bought at the Ohio Selected yearling sale with a $45,000 price tag.
The Next Generation required a nominator to purchase a spot for $10,000 by March 15, but the horse did not need to be declared until the box closed earlier this week. Spots could be sold or traded at any time, with written notification to the race office, up until the box closing. Three spots switched hands in each of the trotting divisions.
