Armycaptin Hanover has made himself the horse to beat at Century Downs in recent weeks with three Open Pace victories in his past four starts.

The Captaintreacherous gelding defeated Icy Blue Scooter after an extended neck-and-neck battle in the Tuesday edition of the Open class.

Starting with rail position advantage, Armycaptin Hanover moved up for driver, trainer, and co-owner Kelly Hoerdt and gained front-end control. Icy Blue Scooter (Nathan Sobey) moved first from the backfield and began grinding on the outside after the leader completed the first quarter mile in :28.2.

Icy Blue Scooter, going side-by-side with Armycaptin Hanover down the backstretch, unleashed a short burst after passing the midway point in :58 and briefly took the lead at three-quarters in 1:24.4. Armycaptin Hanover proved far from finished through, and he put Icy Blue Scooter back in second as they wheeled off the far turn. Icy Blue Scooter stayed with him through the stretch drive but could not find the crucial breakthrough as Armycaptin Hanover held on by a head in 1:52.4.

Icy Blue Scooter was a game second. Tiempo Hanover (Brandon Campbell) finished third after a ground-saving trip.

ARMYCAPTIN HANOVER REPLAY

Armycaptin Hanover paid $5.70 in his second consecutive win. Beaumont residents Blair Corbeil and Hoerdt own the five-year-old gelding that has won 17 times and earned $92,872 in 61 career starts.

Paul Giesbrecht had the day’s hot hand, winning three of the card’s final four dashes.

Century Downs will host live racing again on Sunday, Jul. 18.
