One of the best come back stories in harness racing in the last few years in the Southern Hemisphere has been the re-emergence of Clinton Hall at the top level of the industry down under.
Outed for five years over a drug issue when youth got the better of experience, many thought Clint would find it difficult to fulfill the promise he had always shown on the track.
A member of the all conquering Hall family that has dominated West Australaian harness racing for the last fifteen years, Clint has silenced all the doubters in quick time with two consecutative West Australian Pacing Cups to his name after his favourite horse My Hard Copy took out his second WA Pacing Cup at Gloucester Park last night.
At $450,000, the West Australian Pacing Cup is the jewel that all trainers and drivers in the west want to win and in his brief time back,Clint already has two.
Devendra and James Rattray used barrier one to easily hold the lead early on with Beaudiene Boaz and Gary Hall Jnr settling on his back and Lovers Delight and Chris Lewis sitting in the death seat.
Apart from a brief early challenge from Joan Of Arc, that was the order until a lap to go when Clint eased My Hard Copy out three wide and loomed up outside Devendra and Lover's Delight and the war commenced.
Slowly but surely My Hard Copy wore away at Devendra and rallied gamely in the home straight to nail a famous victory.
It was a daring drive from Clint as My Hard Copy is a noted sit-sprinter and sitting three wide for a lap is not usually his style of racing.
Devendra was extremely game in defeat while Beaudiene Boaz somehow got out three wide from the trail and finished on well late for third.
With no passing lane at Gloucester Park, Gary Hall Jnr had no option but to come off from the inside at the 400 metres mark with Beaudiene Boaz only to see the gaps open up like the red sea on the inside of him as soon as he had done so.
Last nights win was My Hard Copy's twenty second career victory and took his stake earnings over the $910,000 mark.
Clint may still live in the driving shadow of his brother a lot of the time but he is constantly reminding people that given the opportunity, he is as good as anyone in the west.
