Just how good is he?

Juvenile pacer My Ultimate Byron has an impeccable race record but Menangle horseman Jarrod Alchin admits he is not the easiest horse to train.

The unbeaten talent has had four starts to date and faces his next task today at Tabcorp Park Menangle in preparation for a tilt at the Breeders Challenge series.

However, to get a gauge on just where the two-year-old is at is what Alchin struggles with.

“The horse is really well within himself and following his last start, Cam Hart (driver) said he felt as good as he’s ever felt which is promising,” said Alchin.

“He’s actually a hard horse to train because he is not a good trackworker so you don’t know how well he is going.

“He was good first up at Penrith without a trial, he did what he had too.

“He will strip fitter again following this run and won’t be too far off peak fitness by the time his Breeders Challenge heat comes around.”

Alchin has a handful of two-year-olds aimed at the Breeders Challenge series including his filly Madrid as well as My Ultimate Cobber, My Ultimate Ronnie and My Ultimate Skeeta.

“With five horses for the series I will have to split them amongst the heats at Penrith and Menangle,” said Alchin.

As for My Ultimate Byron, the son of Somebeachsomewhere will take on more seasoned horses today.

In fact, this will be the third time in his succinct career that he has raced older horses.

His next start will be a heat of the Breeders Challenge. To view race dates of the Breeders Challenge series click here.

With a career best mile rate of 1:52.4, My Ultimate Byron is the second-fastest two-year-old in Australia this season with Mister Rea holding the top title of 1:52.1.

His winning margins in his four starts to date have been by 12m or more, suggesting we have not seen the bottom to this horse.

So the question is, just how good is he?
