One of the older sayings in harness racing which has proved so true over the generations is top sires will become top broodmare sires.
Everywhere you look both here and in North America you see the same thing over and over again.
Any sire who can climb to the top of the siring charts with his progeny will have his mares do exactly the same thing for him in the broodmare barn.
One sire who is just starting out in the broodmare side of things in New Zealand is Mach Three.
As of today mares by Mach Three have just 54 live foals three years or older on the ground in New Zealand.
Most of those are three year olds but a few are four and five and they have already started in a fashion which would suggest they are headed for the top of the broodmare siring charts as well.
Of those 54 foals, 36 have already qualified and 21 have already been to the winners circle.
Pacquiao 1:52.9 ($137,118) Eyre Crusher 1:56.5 ($79,953) and Al Raza 1:55 ($42,493) are just three of the early winners from mares by Mach Three.
This years yearling sales are very light on progeny from Mach Three mares with only two entries in the Australasian Classic sale.
The one we have chosen to highlight is Lot 137, Vasari.
A colt by one of the hottest sires worldwide at the moment in Art Major, Vasari is the second foal of the young Mach Three mare in Thebestamancanget.
The dam of Thebestamancanget is the former smart two and three year old filly in Ciccio Star 1:58.4 ($102,499)
Ciccio Star won the PGG Sales Pace for fillies at three as well as a heat of the Hyrdoflow Fillies Series.
At stud she has done a great job with eight winners to date including Zenthura 1:56.5 ($117,705) Major Star 1:56.9 ($104,972) Idancedallnight 1:59.3 ($103,655) and Conquistare 1:55.9 ($73,755)
Her daughters are already on the board as broodmares with Idancedallnight the dam of Waltzing With Cullen 1:51.7 ($151,131).
Ciccio Star is a half sister to the very durable Nketia 1:52 ($394,,035) and is closely related to Fake Spirit 1:59 ($184,368) and Chilli Palmer 1:51.5 ($232,859).
This of course is the other side of the famous Black Watch maternal family but this side of the family has been having as much if not more of the limelight in recent times.
Mach Three has done a great job as a sire in New Zealand and it should come as no surprise to anyone when his daughters do a similar job in the broodmare barn in the next few years.
