Harness racing Jewels winner South Coast Arden has powered to a fresh up victory in tonight’s $48,250 (Group 2) Lamb & Hayward Canterbury Classic at Addington Raceway .
Starting off the outside unruly barrier South Coast Arden (Somebeachsomewhere) began ok but had to work hard mid race to find the parked out position and then fight to the line to get his head in front at the post for driver Natalie Rasmussen.
“I knew he would be vulnerable fresh up, but the race panned out pretty good for him” Rasmussen said after the race.
“I got around when the tempo wasn’t too hot and he really only had to sit parked for that last 800m, so it was perfect really,” she said.
Second favourite Pembrook Playboy wasn’t going to be unlucky tonight and after a swift beginning attempted to try to lead all the way. He held on bravely for second while last year’s winner of the race and favourite Self Assured finished in third after making a couple of mid race moves during the race!
Northern trainer Brent Mangos trained the winner, who paced the 2600m stand in a respectable 3:14.9 with a closing 800m in a slick 54.6 seconds.
The first three horses home in the race gained automatic entry into the IRT NZ Cup in November.
