Forty-seven million dollars was spent this week on yearlings at the Lexington Sale. The Standardbred Retirement Foundation, (SRF) is asking those engaged in the business of this sale, as well as others, to help create a more sustainable future for harness racing and its horses by writing one more check.
Sixty-one trotters and pacers that once lit up the boards at yearling sales, like these yearlings just did, are now weighed and tagged for slaughter at pens that have contracts with the Canadian slaughterhouses.
Ten tax-deductible donations of $25,000 each are needed to save their lives.
Just like partnerships in racing, Standardbred Retirement Foundation is reaching out in hopes of securing new partners with forward-thinking owners and breeders who will stand shoulder to shoulder with us to help the equine athletes of this sport live out their lives in dignity – a step towards a more sustainable future for harness racing in the eyes of the public.
This kindness of “giving back” to these horses will be historically recognized. Equally important, these gifts will demonstrate across the United States that harness racing individuals do care; it will set a precedent about their intolerance of slaughter.
Here is the list of horses;
To release from slaughter, the expense for transport; care; quarantine; veterinary, blacksmith, and dental care; rehabilitation; retraining for those able to withstand a rider; homing and follow-up is $250,000, all tax-deductible.
They are scheduled to ship on Monday evening, October 11th, 2021.
SRF is a 32-year-old organization and the largest Standardbred program in the country. In our leadership capacity, we are actively working to pilot a new program in the communities many of these trotters and pacers move on to after racing. The goal is to end the pipeline to slaughter altogether.
The United States Trotting Association-Standardbred Transition Alliance will not support organizations like SRF and others that help these noble warriors when they are at their neediest.
Please put your stake in the ground and let them hear your intolerance of slaughter right now by helping.
Ten donors of $25,000 each from notable stakeholders in racing speaks volumes.
Stand up to slaughter and stand up for these horses, it’s time to enjoy a sport and the magnificence of these animals without the impeding reality of their plight.
