Charlie May and driver Brett Miller left from post seven and never had to look back in capturing the $164,750 Matron Stakes for three-year-old pacing colts at Dover Downs Thursday.
Once on the lead past Chase H Hanover (Tim Tetrick), Charlie May cut fractions of :27 and :56.2. At the half mile marker, Louās Pearlman (Yannick Gingras) came first-over to challenge with Buckabett Hanover (Andy McCarthy) second-over.
The tempo quickened as they went by the three-quarters in 1:22.3. Then in the stretch, Charlie May cruised home to win by a half length in 1:49.2 over Louās Pearlman with Abuckabett Hanover third.
It was the eighth win on the year for Charlie May. The gelded son of McArdle was the even money favorite and paid $4.00 to win for trainer Steve Carter and owner-breeder Don Tiger of Canonsburg, PA.
CHARLIES MAY REPLAY
āIt seems that Dover is a speed track most of the time,ā said winning driver Brett Miller. āI was hoping to get away at least in the top three. He is a horse that does give you anxious moments. He takes care of himself, probably smarter than me. He will allow a horse to get right to him like he did tonight, but I could tell he was not going to let him pass him by.ā
