Champion Trotter Sundees Son has smashed the clock for harness racing trainers Robert and Jenna Dunn, when winning the $300,000 Group One Dominion Handicap at Addington today.
The Majestic Son gelding has trotted the 3200m stand in an astonishing 3:56.6, demolishing his old New Zealand record of 4-00.5 by almost four seconds.
Just to give you an idea of the enormity of the win, three days ago top pacer Copy That won the New Zealand Trotting Cup in 3-58.8, so Sundees Son has bettered that time by more than two seconds.
Driver John Dunn made the race a true staying test when he took the lead after 1000m and kept the pace on for the entire journey.
āWords canāt explain it, to get a horse like this is a dream come true,ā Ā John Dunn said after the race.
āI didnāt want to go that hard early, but he had a bit of pressure and just didnāt come back to me.ā
āIt takes a good horse to over race that hard and keep going at the finish, but luckily he knows where the line is,ā he said.
Stablemate of the winner Mataderos ran a game second for driver Blair Orange and there was a big gap back to the third placed Bolt For Brilliance.
The 3-56.6 equated to a mile rate of 1-58.9 Last 800m: 56.5 Last 400m: 28.8.
