Treble for prominent SA breeder
Rather a notable breeding feat was credited to Adelaide breeders David and Glenda Battye at Globe Derby Park when they bred the winners of three Southern Cross heats – Cobber, Tuppence and Elegant.
The two-year-old Cobber (by A Rocknroll Dance) and three-year-old Tuppence (by Lincoln Royal) are half-brothers, both being out of the Art Major mare Star Crossed (1:56.2), a daughter of the dual Southern Cross champion Endeared 1:56.7 ($244,650).
A winner of 31 races in three States, Endeared became the dam of a Group 1 winning trotter in Enrolled 1:59 ($119,829) and a capable pacer in The Dapper Don 1:55.5 ($101,779). Shew was a half-sister to the Group 1 placegetter Holla (1:59.1), dam of the promising three-year-old Our Holla Star.
Elegant, a two-year-old filly by Somebeachsomewhere, is out of the dual Southern Cross finalist Spokeswoman (1:56.5), and the first of her produce to win. Spokeswoman, who won 15 races, was by Art Major from Fatalistic, by Holmes Hanover from the smart racemare and Group winner Spring Walton 1:59.6 ($125,310), by Walton Hanover from Spring Illusion, by Tompkins Hanover.
This is a long-established NSW family and earlier top two-year-olds belonging to it were Conviction (1:50.2), winner of the NSW Breeders Challenge, and Toymaster (SA Breeders Plate).
Inter Dominion heat winner
Malcolm’s Rhythm, who won the third heat of the Inter Dominion on opening night at Menangle, has now won 14 races and $333,350 in stakes and is regarded as Grand Circuit material of the highest order. He ranks as a five-year-old brother by Art Major to a capable pacer and Listed winner in Be Major Threat 1:55 ($155,035).
She’s Got It All (1:58.6), dam of Malcolm’s Rhythm and Be Major Threat, is a McArdle mare from Gliding By (1:57.4), a Cambridge Cup winner by Vance Hanover from the Out To Win mare Significant, dam of the NZ Oaks winner Pacific Flight 1:51.2 ($562,345), who later raced successfully in America, and the Victorian ‘cups king The Unicorn 1:57.8 ($488,524).
She’s Got It All was only a moderate herself but she was a half-sister to the exported Raptorial 1:50.2 ($316,088), the Gloucester Park winner Face Your Fears (1:58.6) and Millwood’s Delight (1:57), who became the dam of this year’s WA Derby winner Mighty Ronaldo 1:54 ($274,980).
Another half-sister in Zwish produced the brilliant but ill-fated Dee Zana (1:54.6) and the good Melton winner Phil Monty 1:54.3 ($89,068).
This has been one of the most successful branches of the Regina family, Significant being a half-sister to Remarkable (1:53.2) and a close relative to pacers of the calibre of Arden Rooney, Cash N Flow, Katy Perry, Sovereign Hill and Keayang Cullen.
Malcolm’s Rhythm was bred by Goulburn Valley breeders Gary Hawthorn and Jenny Gallagher.
Timothy Red is well bred
Timothy Red, an upset winner of an Inter Dominion Trotting heat on opening night at Menangle and a second heat winner in a flying 1:56.2 at Bathurst, is a four-year-old trotter of some potential. Having only his second season of racing, Timothy Red has won five and been four times placed from 16 starts.
Timothy Red has an interesting breeding background with a strong emphasis on pacing in the back removes of his pedigree. By Muscle Hill, he is out of the Sundon mare Aleppo Midas 1:56.3 ($142,804), who won a string of races, many from long handicap marks, in Victoria.
Aleppo Midas, bred by Dale Eastman and Wayne Schulze, was out of Insulated, by Safely Kept from She’s Cool, by Glen Almahurst from Kiwi’s Lady, by Out To Win from Bachelor’s Advice, who founded a noted branch of the Pride of Lincoln family.
Although Insulated, the grand-dam of Timothy Red, was bred along strong pacing lines, she won five races as a trotter and left other trotting winners in the Breeders Crown champion Aleppo Sunrise 1:59.7 ($204,930), the Group 2 winner Aleppo Jewel and multiple Group placegetter Aleppo Murphy (1:57.9).
Insulated was a sister to the Moonee Valley winner Aleppo Lady (1:57.9) and a half-sister to Heaven, the dam of Dreams Of Heaven 1:58.9 ($150,444), who, in turn, left the Breeders Crown and dual Derby winner Menin Gate 1:54.3 ($574,758).
Another half-sister to Insulated in Shes Our Angel (by Classic Garry) produced 10 winners including the Victoria Sapling winner NIghtn Georgia, the exported Kasey John 1:50.6 ($187,501), the Devonport Cup victor Sky Tower 1:58.5 ($241,236) and Jasmin Amal 1:55 ($101,511). She was also the second dam of the dual Vicbred champion Rocknrolla 1:57.1 ($287,351), the Group 3 winner Carload 1:54.7 ($141,912) and the prolific Albion Park winner Tightrope 1:53.6 ($204,098) and Reign Of Fear 1:53.2 ($127,525).
Silver winner from good broodmare
Khafaji, a Somebeachsomewhere two-year-old and a winner of the Group 3 Breeders Crown Silver at Bendigo when having only his fifth start, is out of Trebla Trebla, a capable racemare with a record of 1:58.5 who is proving a successful broodmare.
Trebla Trebla is also the dam of Bettor Downunder 1:53.2 ($134,067), a dual Listed winner, the exported Ideal Lifestyle 1:50.3 ($320,318), Topsie’s Delight (1:56.1) and Helen’s In Paradise (dam of Common Courtesy). Trebla Trebla was an Albert Albert mare from Norwood Topsie, by New York Motoring from Tabella Topsie, by Windshield Wiper from the Gyro mare Gyressa.
Trebla Trebla was a sister to the Harold Park and Menangle winner Dash Of Class 1:55.8 ($175,997) and a half-sister to the Melton victor Topsie Grinner (1:54.3) and the Perth winner Bratski (1:58.9). Their dam, Norwood Topsie, was unraced, but she left eight winners.
Other members of this family, which was founded in NZ by Mayflower, were the Inter Dominion heat and Victorian country cups winner Its Motor Power (TT1:54.3), the Yarra Valley Cup winner Sunray and Gyressa (Wedderburn Cup).
Brothers win at Albion Park
It was no mean feat for the full brothers Blacksadance and Big Wheels to win on the same night at Albion Park last Saturday. Both earned new lifetime marks with Blacksadance clocking a brilliant 1:50.9 and Big Wheels (1:53.9).
Both are by the Rocknroll Hanover horse A Rocknroll Dance (one of Australia’s leading sires this season).
Washington Lass (1:55.6), the dam of Big Wheels and Blacksadance, was out of Supreme Duchess, by Son Of Afella from Sparkle Bret, by Knowing Bret from Honest Sparkle, by Honest Master from the Kingcobra mare Glowater, a half-sister to the top NSW pacer Viking Water.
Besides Washington Lass, the winner of five races at Menangle, Supreme Duchess was the dam of the Gloucester Park winner Julius Supreme (1:58.6). This is the family which produced the mighty Tactile, winner of a record five derbies, the Kilmore Cup winner Bitobliss and a string of top ranking pacers tracing back to Red Diamond.
An Ace from Venus Serena
A star three-year-old in NSW this season is Arden’s Ace, who was bred in NZ by John Stiven and is trained by Tony Bertwistle.
A gelding by Art Major, he is out of a champion racemare in Venus Serena 1:52.1 ($796,397), the dam also of the cup class pacer Laver 1:51.9 ($103,308). Arden’s Ace won his fifth race at Menangle in a heat of the Carousel and looks a three-year-old with the potential one would expect of his breeding.
Star four-year-old by Sportswriter
A bright future is being predicted for the Sporstwriter four-year-old Rick Reilly, who success at Melton last Saturday was his sixth winning run from 10 starts on Australian soil.
He has a good deal in his favour on the score of blood. Apart from being by Sportswriter, Rick Reilly is out of the Pacific Rocket mare Shard’s Fantasy, a half-sister to the NZ Derby winner Likmesiah 1:55.9 ($427,965) and Mighty Cullen 1:50.4 ($643,448), being out of She’s Mighty, by New York Motoring from Mighty Miss Mac and tracing to the Wildmoor mare Millie C, whose family today is one of the best in the NZ stud book.
It includes the dual NZ Cup winner Just An Excuse, Mysta Magical Mach (WA Pacing Cup), Bettor Enforce (1:48.9), Tell Me Tales (1:49.3), Forever Gold, Pachacuti, Blucolla Tigerpie and many others.
Rick Reilly ranks as a half-brother to the Listed winner Bledisloe 1:55 ($125,314), the prolific Albion Park winner Slice Of Heaven 1:52.2 ($124,767), Miss Fantastic (1:58.6), dam of the promising Sydney pacer Rossini (1:52.5) and Miss McArdle (dam of recent Menangle winner Miss Mach 1:52.9).

He has maintained his consistent form in his three-year-old season, notching a further five successes with 10 placings from 24 starts.
