The South Australian racing community is mourning the loss of one of its horsemen, Mark Webster.

After a lengthy battle with illness, Mark passed away on Wednesday aged 58.

During his years in harness racing, Mark drove 969 winners, as electronic records have kept, and trained 447 winners since the mid 1980s’.

He always “had a handy horse” as trainer-driver Geoff Webster said.

“Mark was always around horses,” said Geoff.

“He grew up with all of us and his dad used to break horses in at the Klemzig track.

“He took up playing footy and played six to 10 games for North Adelaide, he was a handy footballer.

“But, like all of us, the harness bug crept in and he started training horses.

“He moved out to Angle Vale and that’s where he had been for the rest of his life.

“He always had a handy horse . . . Zulu Lou was definitely one of his best, he was a nice country cups horse.”

Mark is survived by his wife Carolyn and children Laura and Anthony.
