Promising two-year-old Sugar Apple lowered his own record when winning the Group 3 Breeders Plate Final at Leeton on Sunday night.
The two-year-old son of Sweet Lou led throughout the $30,600 final and rated 1:55.5 and spacing his rivals by more than seven metres.
He rated 1:55.6 when winning a heat of the race at that venue 12 days earlier, setting a new two-year-old record at Leeton in that effort.
This result has capped off a great year for trainer Jason Grimson who just recently won the time-honoured Inter Dominion Pacing Championship with Boncel Benjamin.
āI was pretty happy with his run considering he copped pressure throughout the race,ā said Grimson.
āIt can sort out the good ones when they get pressured like that.
āIāll probably give him a fortnight off now and hope he can turn into a Derby colt for our carnival here (New South Wales).ā
Sugar Apple, a half-brother to American Dealer, has remained unbeaten in his four Australian starts with Grimson and was driven by Blake Jones in his last two wins.
He set a personal best mile rate when winning at Newcastle on December 3 in 1:53.9.
