Wheels On Fire continued his domination of the Preferred harness racing pacing ranks at Mohawk Park with his third straight win of the new year Saturday evening.
The seven-year-old gelded son of Somebeachsomewhere began the second race feature getting away in third place for driver Doug McNair as Woodmere Stealdeal (Jonathan Dury) was quickest off the gate, leading the field to the opening quarter mile in :28.1.
Uhtred and driver Sylvain Filion got away in second and then moved right to the lead after the first quarter and led the field to the half mile in :57 and the three-quarters in 1:25.3. It was in the backstretch that McNair sent Wheels On Fire to the outside and challenged Uhtred.
Clearing to the lead as they started down the stretch, Wheels On Fire shifted into another gear and drew away to win by two and one-half lengths in 1:52.4. Uhtred held for second over a late closing Jimmy Freight (Louis-Philippe Roy).
