Tony Cameron will line-up his first runner for the season at Alexandra Park on Thursday and he is hoping to make a perfect start to the new term.

The South Auckland horseman will be represented by Mountain Mass (Muscle Mass) in the Dunstan Speedfeed Summer Series Mobile Trot (1700m).

It will be a month between runs for the four-year-old gelding who finished runner-up at the Auckland track on New Year’s Eve when beaten by Still Eyre over 2200m.

Cameron has been pleased with his progress since that run and he is expecting a bold showing from the ace draw.

“He has come through that run really well and he has been working on at home really nice,” said Cameron, who will also take the reins.

“There are a couple of handy ones in there, but he has been racing well.

“I am pretty happy with him and he gets the ace draw so that is always going to be a help.”

The son of Muscle Mass had an extended break last year and Cameron said he has thrived with his time away from racing.

“He was just immature so I decided to give him a good four months in the paddock and it seems like it has done him the world of good,” Cameron said.

While Cameron has just the one runner in himself, he is looking forward to being active in the cart where he will have three other drives.

Sly Terror has drawn handy in two in the Breckon Farms – Class Of 2019 100% To The Track Mobile Pace (2200m) and Cameron is hoping for a positive result.

“He has been racing well and he comes up with a pretty good draw,” Cameron said. “He tries his guts out and I have been really happy with him the way he has been going lately.”

Cameron is also looking forward to guiding Mum’s Jewel in the Lone Star Alexandra Park Mobile Trot (1700m) but he said the mare will benefit from more race experience.

“She is a nice horse,” he said. “She got a third and a first and has gone up to that grade. She will just need a bit of racing ringcraft and she will be all the better for it.”

Cameron’s final drive of the night will be behind last start winner Cos I Can in the Woodlands 2022 Yearling Sales Draft Mobile Pace (1700m) for trainer Mike Berger.

“He has got a fair bit of speed,” Cameron said. “If he is saved up for one run he is pretty potent with that last run at them. He was really impressive at Cambridge with that last win.”
