In-form Tamahere trainer-driver Sean McCaffrey is in for a busy Sunday at Hawera – and that includes chances in both the Taranaki and Hawera Cups.
“In terms of consistency I’d say Betterzippit is my best, he’s a good race horse.”
McCaffrey has six drives today after recording two victories on the first day of the Hawera meeting on Friday with Bodrum Boy and Highview Rockn Roll winning for trainers John Godfrey and Donald “Flash” Cossey.
He will drive both horses again with Bodrum Boy lining up in the Revital Fertiliser Taranaki Cup (R6) in a field that includes other first day winners, Uncle Drew and Dennis Denuto.
“He does have some jarring up issues on hard tracks,” McCaffrey says of Bodrum Boy, “but he won relatively easy and with a trip he’s a chance.”
The day’s feature, the South Taranaki Club Hawera Cup, goes at 3.43pm, with McCaffrey says it’s shaping up as an open race – “none of them are easybeats”.
Betterzippit (Betterthancheddar) finished second over 2100m on the first day and will start off 20 metres today though McCaffrey is hoping the extra distance of the Hawera Cup (3000m) will play in his favour.
“He’s the whole package…and will keep coming at them.”
The four year old gelding has won four from 16 starts.
But McCaffrey is wary of the likes of the Tony Herlihy-trained Last Tango In Heaven and proven grass track performers like the Doug Gale-trained American Me.
McCaffrey’s last drive is with Toodaloolou in race 10.
“She’s a nice chance on the grass, she’s a leggy mare and that’s why I didn’t start her on the first day.”
The four-year-old daughter of Sweet Lou has so far won two from 11.
McCaffrey’s six drives for the day are Swimintheriver (R2), Highview Rockn Roll (R5), Bodrum Boy (R6), Betterzippit (R8), Beaudiene Brittanie (R9) and Toodaloolou (R10).
