WASHINGTON, PA, March 31, 2022 — Lady Newton followed live cover down the backside, then blazed wide through the lane to spring a 9-1 harness racing upset in Thursday’s $16,000 Filly & Mare Open Handicap Pace at Hollywood Casino at The Meadows.

Aaron Merriman positioned Lady Newton on the bumper of All Day Sunshine, who easily put away the leader, Pace Baby Pace. But she couldn’t hold off Lady Newton, who stormed past to defeat her by 2-1/2 lengths in 1:52.1 over a “good” surface. Tonianne rallied for show.

Bill Bercury trains the 4-year-old daughter of Sweet Lou-I’m Sassy, who extended her career bankroll to $124,802, for Renee Bercury.

Elsewhere on Thursday’s card, trainer Marcus Marashian celebrated career win 1,500 when Racing My Beamer rolled to a front-end victory in race 4. Marashian became something of a sensation when his horses collected 211 wins in his first two full years of training. His horses have earned nearly $8.6 million in purses.

Dave Palone piloted three winners on the 11-race card.

Live racing at The Meadows continues Friday when the 11-race program features a pair of carryovers: $1,297.58 in the Jackpot Pick 5 (race 4), $745.23 in the final-race Super Hi-5. First post is 12:45 PM.
