Brumby was five lengths the best as he lowered his lifetime mark in the first harness racing leg of the New Brunswick Breeders Stakes on Exhibition Park’s opening day on Saturday (May 14).

Brumby returns to the winner’s circle

Driver Mark Bradley gave the son of Pang Shui the lead in the three-horse first division group of colts and had little more work to do as the gelding paced through fractions of :29.2, 1:00, and 1:29.1 and sailed away to a 1:59 romp. Big Time Brawler (Michael Downey) had place locked up at the half as Theodore J Down (Stephen Mason) was well back. The win price was $2.10.

BRUMBY REPLAY

The Charlottetown-based Five Guys Horses N Lies owns Brumby. Jamie Smith has trained the three-year-old to three wins in 12 career starts and $25,370 in earnings.

In the filly division, 23-1 shot Kcs Starlite claimed the lead after a :29.2 first-quarter duel for Stephen Trites, battled with overwhelming favourite Mermaid magic (Bradley) through the half in 1:00 and to three-quarters in 1:30.1, and forged clear for the victory in 2:01.1. Mermaid Magic was 12 and a half lengths clear of third-place finisher Elm Grove Quest (Allan Jones).

KCS STARLITE REPLAY

Charles Miles trains the winning three-year-old Source Of Pride filly and co-owns her with fellow Fredericton residents Donald Bishop and Bruce Macdonald. Kcs Starlite’s debut win improved her lifetime record to three-for-eight and bumped her earnings up to $10,132.

The NB Breeders Stakes is open to New Brunswick-foaled two- and three-year-old pacers. The second leg for three-year-olds is set for Jun. 4, 2022 at Exhibition Park Raceway. The final will go for $25,000A on Oct. 15.

The two-year-olds will take the stage on Jul. 2 and Aug. 5 before the $50,000A final on Oct. 15.

Exhibition Park Raceway goes live again at 1:00 p.m. ADT on Saturday, May 21.
