Passed in at a harness racing yearling sale to winning a Group 1 – that is the story of Bathurst pacer Lyrical Genius.
The Amanda Turnbull-trained son of Somebeachsomewhere has had a chequered path to the racetrack but all that was put behind him when the gelding won Wednesday night’s $100,000 Group 1 Regional Championships Western Final at Bathurst.
Part-owner Peter Crennan admits a lot of work has been out into the four-year-old to get him to this point.
“This is my first Group 1 win as an owner and it’s very cool . . . I’ve been celebrating for the last two days,” said Crennan.
“Lyrical Genius was passed in at the sale and there were photos posted of him on social media and he was a good looking colt.
“Amanda is the brains behind it all and picked him out.
“Josh Turnbull (Amanda’s brother) broke him in and he was mad as a young horse . . . he actually tipped Josh out of the gig which was funny.
“Josh had to give him a few preparations because he was a bit of a handful and still shoes him to this day.
“Josh and Amanda have put a lot of work into this horse so this Group 1 win is very rewarding.
“The horse is also owned by Jenny Turnbull and a friend of mine Beau who said he has watched the replay 648 times, and it’s been great to share the success with them.”
Lyrical Genius led throughout to win the feature and returned a mile rate of 1:59.3 for the 2260m event.
Driven by Amanda Turnbull, Lyrical Genius extended his record to eight wins and six placings in 20 starts.
He was bred by John Dumesny.
