Stash It Away, an Atlantic harness racing star at two, opened his three-year-old campaign with a victory in the second colt and gelding division of the Dawn Bremner Memorial Stake at Exhibition Park Raceway on Saturday (May 21).

The Pang Shui gelding could not hold the lead from post one, so driver Corey Macpherson sent him around Rollwithhottytoddy (Myles Heffernan, Sr.) to the front as they swung towards the quarter mile marker in :28.4. Stash It Away conserved stamina in a second panel that concluded in 1:01.1 but came under attack from Rollwithhottytoddy as they approached three-quarters in 1:31.

Stash It Away stopped that rival’s advance on the final turn and rolled to the finish line in 2:00.1. Rollwithhottytoddy was a half-length short. Fern Hill General (Brodie MacPhee) finished third.

The win price was $4.60.

STASH IT AWAY REPLAY

Stash It Away’s win was his ninth lifetime in 13 starts. He has now earned $66,140 for owner Reginald MacPherson of Stratford. Kevin Maclean trains the gelding that won several stakes races in 2021, including the Maritime Breeders Stakes and Atlantic Sires Stakes Breeders Crown.

Alldawaytocardigan (Heffernan) led his four opponents through :31, 1:04, and 1:34.2 splits in the other division for sophomore colts and sailed to the finish to win by two lengths in 2:04. Brumby (Adam Merner) finished second, two-and-three-quarter lengths clear of Soul Assassin (David Dowling).

ALLDAWAYTOCARDIGAN REPLAY

It was Alldawaytocardigan’s second lifetime win in 13 attempts. Heffernan trains the son of Tobago Cays for Jackie Heffernan of Glace Bay. The gelding has earned $15,883.

Ultimate Long Shot (David Dowling) kept her neck in front after a final-quarter battle to secure a wire-to-wire score in 2:00 after leading through :28.4, 1:00.4, and 1:31.2 fractions in the sole filly division. She survived the charge of Mystical Gal (Dale Spence), who surged at the pylons late and passed first-over challenger Woodmere Jazz (Macpherson) for second.

ULTIMATE LONG SHOT REPLAY

Earl Watts conditions Ultimate Long Shot, a daughter of Malicious. She is now five-for-10 lifetime and has brought in $25,607 for owners Windemere farms of Springvale, River Valley Management of Saint John, and Clive Balderston of Moncton. The winner is now two-for-two on the season.

The Dawn Bremner Memorial was open to Atlantic provinces-foaled three-year-old pacers.

Exhibition Park Raceway is back in action on Saturday, May 28.
